There’s something wrong with the human race. Even though logic and our hearts tell us we can accomplish so much more through cooperation and compassion, we so easily fall into survival mentality where we hoard resources to protect our own butts at the expense of those others around us. This tendency points to a subconscious level fear that is activated very easily when we suspect any type of deprivation may come our way. Very quickly our consciousness reverts back to a Law of the Jungle posture where we can justify any selfishness in the name of self-preservation.

This has led me to theorize that buried deep in our genetic memories is a very traumatic catastrophe that is the motivator of this illogical but highly predictable behavior. In my blog post The Hidden Prehistory of Planet Earth I refer to the Younger-Dryas period (12,900- 11,700 years ago) as a time of great planetary upheaval and cataclysm. So much so that I believe each human carries in their genes a record of the devastation that occurred and the resulting suffering and deprivation. This subconscious memory is triggered very easily by fear and results in the aforementioned self-centered behavior. Only with great resolve can enlightened persons resist this proclivity and act with benevolent generosity.

There are definitely those among us who are more susceptible to a fear of lack mentality. These can be found in those “hoarders” who illogically and greedily collect things and resources in ridiculous amounts- more than they could ever use in a lifetime. To achieve this monumental folly they often sacrifice their happiness, health and life in an obsessive compulsion to obtain the wealth and/or status they crave.

In the Orson Welles cinematic masterpiece Citizen Kane, the protagonist’s lifelong obsession with wealth and power is triggered by a boyhood experience of traumatic loss. This premise of this 1940 film so deeply resonates with the human subconscious that for many years it has been critically acclaimed to be the best motion picture on the human condition ever made. (Note: I did not say it was popularly acclaimed the most enjoyable film ever made). Try though he certainly did, Orson Welles never tapped the human Zeitgeist so elegantly as he did in Citizen Kane.

To me, this is more evidence that the darkest recesses of the human collective consciousness carries psychic scars from a tragic cataclysm of immense magnitude. A time of suffering deprivation, loss and pain so great that even today, when calamity appears imminent, we instinctively shut down our emotions and logic while seeking any way to feel safe and secure. Unfortunately, in this state of mind, the law of attraction comes into play, causing us to attract more tragedy, poverty and cataclysm. In fact, the more the collective consciousness reverts to survival mentality, the more we manifest into reality those incidents that require us to stay in this low vibration and limited consciousness mentality. It’s a self-sustaining cycle of suffering.

Along with this detrimental, subconscious recognizance all Earth humans share in their DNA, many others carry psychic wounds from past lives that also motivate their outlook and behavior. Now add to this a hefty dose of pessimistic programming from parents and society and you have the perfect storm of diminished mindset, manifesting a lifetime of agonizing disappointment. Is it any wonder “the mass of men lead lives of quiet desperation” as Henry David Thoreau observed?

Now for the good news! All this psychic trash can be deleted by intentionally taking charge of our mental domain. In the New Testament letter to the Romans (chapter 12 verse 2) the writer puts it this way; “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and prove what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.” In this passage we are exhorted to renew our minds, rejecting the pattern of this world. What is the pattern of this world? To consistently manifest tragedy, lack and suffering. What will a renewed mind produce? A manifest reality that is the will of a loving Father/God who wants the best for his children.

How then does one “renew their mind” so they may manifest a good, pleasing and perfect reality? In the remainder of Chapter 12 the writer of Romans goes on to enumerate a list of attitudes and actions that lead to high vibration living. We are exhorted to abandon service to self mentality in favor of a service to others mindset. To think elevated thoughts of compassion and cooperation. To treat others the way we want to be treated and to be the change we want to see in the world.

Another New Testament passage that speaks to the renewing of the mind is Philippians chapter 4 verse 8 “Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.” Again, we are exhorted to elevate our thoughts (and therefore our vibration) to experience a blessed life.

If one understands (as the ancient Greeks did) that the consciousness is the soul, then the salvation of the soul is the renewal and expansion of the mind to a positive mentality that mirrors Divine Source. This is the Gnostic Christian understanding of Redemption. When one comprehends this simple truth, all the teachings and actions of Jesus are amplified and expanded. We now understand that he sought to change the image and concept of God from that of someone who is a vindictive punisher of infractions to a loving parent who longs for the needs of their child to be abundantly provided for. In his words and actions, in his life and his death, Jesus sought to exemplify this supreme truth. That God is Love.
When the people asked him to teach them to pray, he instructed them to begin with these words; “Our Father”. No one today can comprehend just how revolutionary this was at the time. By telling them to think of God as their Father, he was also conferring upon them the status of Sons and Daughters of God rather than mere subjects of a scary and all-powerful Deity/judge. This was unheard of at the time and flew in the face of all conventions. Gods were wrathful, capricious and to be feared, not to be approached with familiarity (root word family). It was a fundamental conceptual shift designed to give them a totally transcendent perspective on life!

Rather than expecting to experience deprivation and punishment, they could now expect abundance and happiness in the care of a Divine Parent who loved them unconditionally. By the renewing of their mind to a positive and generous mentality they could re-vision and revise their future reality. By co-creating with the authority and power of their Divine Progenitor they could take charge of their reality and make it a mirror of Divine reality. In the truest sense of the word, they could become Godchildren free from the psychic garbage of the past. As can we all!
