Aquafarian Encounter.

It was a beautiful spring day in 1992, and I found myself on Sea Island, Georgia riding in a limo provided by the client I would be working for. Spanish Moss was hanging from the oak trees as the late afternoon light filtered softly through the branches. I was told the resort hotel I was staying at had recently hosted the President of the United States who had stopped in to play 18 holes on the adjacent world-famous golf course.

I was there to direct a promotional video for a golf academy that was attached to the resort. A special package deal of lodgings and lessons was being offered for those who wanted to be mentored by Professional Golfers. I checked into the lavish and beautiful resort hotel and then ordered some room service so I could enjoy a quiet evening readying myself for the job ahead.

The “shoot day” was always long- normally running from just before sunrise to just after sunset. It seems script writers love to include both sunrise and sunset shots in all resort property videos. Being that I was functioning as the Director and Videographer on this shoot, I was up before the dawn and set up on the beach waiting to capture the sunrise as it sparkled on the Atlantic Ocean. As usual, I created a “magic moment” shot by choosing a spot where the sun would be rising behind sailboats anchored just off the beach. As an added bonus, a pod of dolphins was swimming and breaching in the foreground.

Next was a catered breakfast meeting back at the resort to meet the crew from the hotel/golf academy. This was an opportunity to go over the shot list and script and make a schedule for the day. Models and instructors would be needed for some scenes so it was important to have call times so they would be ready when needed. A helicopter would be on standby for aerial “fly over” shots and that also needed to be coordinated so as capture the Resort and Golf Course in the best light.

The crews and I integrated well and with friendly professionalism. By the time breakfast was over, the schedule for the day was hammered out. The weather was going to be perfect and we were all looking forward to a smooth day of shooting as we traveled in a parade of golf carts to the various scene locations. My job as Director/Videographer was to make every performance and every shot look amazing, and I was confident in my ability to do just that. Over the years, I had trained my eyes to see not only the epic panoramas but little details like sunlight sparkling on the dew covered grass. I also had confidence in my crew that each would do their job well.

As it turned out, we finished the morning scenes early and the next shot on the schedule involved the helicopter (which hadn’t arrived yet), so I called for a break from the shooting. We would resume after lunch at the helipad. The crew scattered in various directions. I noticed we were near the beach, so I decided to take a meditation walk on my way to the conference room where lunch would be served.

Heading toward the water, I broke through a hedge of bushes and down a small sand dune to find I was on a narrow beach covered with ocean flotsam and jetsam. Much to my surprise, swimming a few feet off the shore, was a dolphin. Now to be sure, this was an amazing moment for me. As a kid, my favorite show was “Flipper” which chronicled the adventures of a young boy living near the Florida Everglades. He had a pet dolphin and together they had all kinds of adventures in the waters around their home.

I quickly removed my shoes/socks and rolled up my pants so I could wade into the water. Much to my surprise, my dolphin companion rolled on one side and swam slowly by- watching me all the time with one eye. As I waded into the water, I half expected him to bolt away, but was pleased that instead, he cautiously approached, stopping just a foot or two away. He playfully splashed some water at me with his nose and began to vocalize in happy sounding dolphin clicks and giggles as if he was greeting a long-lost friend!

Needless to say, I was more than a little astonished! I cheerfully greeted him, asked how he was doing and any other polite questions I could think of. Each query was answered with more joyful dolphin vocalizations. I couldn’t believe I was having a back and forth conversation with an actual dolphin! I desperately wanted someone else to witness this so I’d have corroboration it really happened! Alas, it was just me and my flippered friend on that little beach that glorious spring day.

I’m not sure if I stepped nearer or he swam closer, but now we were right next to each other. He was on his side waving a flipper toward me so I reached out and touched it. Immediately I felt a wave of love and joy sweep over me and I knew I was in the presence of an intelligent, sentient being of high vibration. I gently rubbed his torso between his flippers and he blew happy little bubbles in the water. This encounter was so magical I felt as if I was pulled into a higher dimension and completely lost track of time. Suddenly, an alarm I had set on my watch went off letting me know it was time to head back to the hotel for lunch.

I apologized to my Aquafarian friend for needing to leave, (and whether it was coming from him or me I’ll never know), but a feeling of sadness washed over me- the recognition I was leaving a friend I would not see again in this lifetime. I touched his dorsal fin gently rubbing it between by fingers and then wished him Bon Voyage. I slowly walked away and up onto the sandy beach. I picked up my shoes and socks and climbed the little sand dune, stopping at the top to turn around for one last look at my friend. He was swimming slowly back and forth and before heading out to sea, he rolled on his side and waved his flipper at me one last time.

I say Bon Voyage my seafaring friend to the dolphin.

At lunch I tried to tell the crew about my magical encounter, but they just made a joke out of it, something about needing to get home and be with my girlfriend. I learned early on in life that some things are best kept to yourself. People will laugh at and ridicule things they don’t understand (or find hard to believe) and I wasn’t in the mood to have the experience diminished, so I let it drop.

A meme that asks: "What if the true intelligence of a species is measured by its ability to live in harmony and equilibrium with the natural environment that sustains it, rather than by its ability to exploit and destroy it?"

For all I can remember, I “sleep walked” through the remainder of the shoot. It all seemed rather mundane compared to my beach encounter. In fact, I can’t really recall much of what happened the rest of the afternoon. I have an overall memory that everything went well and I vaguely remember meeting some famous Pro Tour Golfers, but those amazing memories spent communing with an oceanic Earthling are transcendent and what is vividly lodged in my memory.

To this day I wonder if I was meeting a soul acquaintance from another life or a highly psychic creature that wanted to communicate with me. Or both. When you walk in higher dimensions, you must not be surprised when ordinary moments suddenly become extraordinary.
