Rediscovering Music at 66: Embracing Creativity with AI

I’m writing this blog article on my 66th birthday. To me, it doesn’t seem possible that I’m 66 years old. When I look around at others who are in their mid 60s to me they seem much older than me. I guess it helps that I enjoy excellent health and love my life. It puts a spring in my step and a song in my heart. Which brings me to the musical part of this post.

Many years ago I was partnered with a woman who was a talented musician. Being a Minister’s daughter, her instruments were the piano and organ. I had taught myself the basics of playing the guitar and we collaborated on writing some songs. I would write the lyrics, create the melody and she would write the music down. She would then add chords and play around with different time signatures and styles. Eventually we hit upon something we both liked. We would play the songs for close family/friends and some of them at church.

She was taking advanced level piano lessons from an accomplished music professor. He was very impressed with our songs and noted the melodies were exceptional. I wanted to publish the songs, but deep seated insecurities meant she wasn’t onboard with that. This turned out to be one of many things that drove a wedge between us leading to our eventual parting. It also soured me on playing music and I gave up the guitar and song writing.

Being that I had many other creative outlets, I channeled my energy into my Photography, Videography, Writing and Film Making. I hung around with many musicians but never collaborated with them except to help with recording and engineering. Ironically, my non-musical, fictional writings did actually inspire a few songs that were recorded. One of the things that gives me the most satisfaction is to be an inspiration to the creativity of others.

Creative souls are those who have formed a strong connection with Source over many lifetimes. They are born with talents they developed over many incarnations. Their connection to Source Consciousness allows them to connect with the creative power of the Universe and download ideas. In fact, they can’t help themselves. They must have a creative outlet to be happy and fulfilled.

I use A.I. powered software to create images for my articles. It also animates images for the Mentagenesis Media videos on this blog and my YouTube channel. If you think A.I. is inherently evil, please read my article where I explain why I disagree. (Click this link to read it). I see it as a great opportunity to quickly produce mind expanding media which is what Mentagenesis is all about. In fact, I’m not altogether certain whether or not I manifested A.I. into this reality to help creative types like me get thinks done (wink)!

Imagine my happiness when I noticed that inside my software was a module for collaborating with A.I. to write songs. The process works like this. First, you have two options. You can provide the lyrics or write a prompt that explains what you’d like your song to be about. You should include key concepts and details. For instance, if you’re writing a love song, you can describe the person the song is about. You should also describe how you feel about this person. A.I. will then generate suggested lyrics which you can edit and improve if you like.

The next step is to generate a melody. You give the lyrics to A.I. and it gives you back a simple melody. The accompaniment is very basic. You can accept this melody or send it back to A.I. to try again. It helps if in your prompt you include instructions such as “in the style of.” Also, you can reference an existing song you’d like it to be similar to. With my software (Video Express & Clone Voice) I cannot currently edit the melody directly. I’m hoping that will change and soon will be a feature.

Next you choose a musical genre (Rock, Pop, Funk, Techno etc) and either a male or female vocalist. Once you hit the “generate song” button, it takes about 2-5 minutes to deliver a fully orchestrated song with vocal. If you don’t like what A.I. produces, you can have it try again. The new version can be in the same genre or an alternate.

Is this cheating? When I was a musician, I used to toil over songs for hours, days, and sometimes weeks. In some ways, I say yes, it is. But it’s also a delightful time saver. It works much the same way as driving a car gets you somewhere faster than walking. My goal is to communicate my truths in word, image and now song. Therefore it helps me accomplish my goal with speed and efficiency. Does it represent my creativity completely? No. But then, no one who collaborates with someone else on a creative project is the sole originator either.

The upshot is I experimented for a couple of hours and came up with the following song. I rendered it in various styles. Then I imported the styles into my editing software and made three mashups. My next project is to create a music video. It will be a part of the library of Mentagenesis mind expanding media. If you like the song, feel free to download it to your music library.
